Piemonte Land of Perfection Grand Tasting Event was held on July 18th 2012, in New York City. It was an afternoon of wine tasting, educational seminars, and networking opportunities exclusively for buyers, restaurateurs and journalists – overall, an important day for the rediscovery of wines from Piemonte in the United States. More than 300 tasters also from Florida, Texas, Massachusetts and California came to discover Piedmont wines. To welcome them were a selection of over 200 Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato d’Asti, Brachetto d’Acqui and Asti Spumante wines to taste.
“Piemonte Land of Perfection” was established on July 29th, 2011 with the support of the Regional Council of Piedmont to draw attention to the region’s unique and exceptional heritage and terroir in the North West Italy. The event in New York marked the United States debut of this “Consortium of consortiums,’ which brings together the main consortiums for the protection of individual products (Consorzi di Tutela) and producers’ associations, although the wines of Piemonte have been celebrated here already for some time. During the tastings, journalists and importers were able to satisfy their interest and curiosity about the native grape varieties of Piemonte, “our strength in an increasingly competitive market,” said Mr. Andrea Ferrero, chairman of Piemonte Land of Perfection. “We have an advantage: people in the United States have known, appreciated and consumed our wines for years.”
The event, held at the Tribeca skyline venue, Three Sixty, began with a Grand Tasting of a selection of the best Piemonte wines: the sweet Asti Spumante, the more structured Barbera, and the great wines of the Langhe region, Barolo and Barberesco. Other familiar and esteemed wines were present, such as Moscato d’Asti, which experienced recently a surge in popularity in the United States, as well as Brachetto d’Acqui and other minor DOC and DOCG wines.
Master of Wine Christy Canterbury led a seminar-journey to discover the “Big Reds and Aromatic Wines,” of Piemonte to a full audience.
“I have given many talks about wine, in many parts of the world: London, Sofia, Hong Kong, Chicago, but have never had to answer so many questions about wine, grapes and denominations”, said Canterbury of the event where she had her first taste of Albarossa, an indigenous variety that is not widely produced. She remarked on the convenience of the open tasting format, where guests could introduce themselves to both the core varieties as well as some new names with ease.
Piemonte is not only the source of world-renowned wines, according to Ferrero, it is also “the home to great men and women who cultivate the vines and take care of the land. A region that is proud of its native grape varieties and where quality is a tradition. In the restaurant industry, Piemonte’s products, wines and recipes have won the hearts and palates of the Americans”
