Selecting an Añejo Lineup

Choosing which rums to stock is similar to selecting candidates to fill a particular category on a wine list (e.g., Zinfandel). Like wine, rum is made in many different styles, with each well-made product possessing singular qualities and characteristics. A worthy goal is to develop a selection that will intrigue your clientele and adequately cover the spectrum of possibilities. In addition to the well-known brands, you should consider carrying several rums that might not have the same label recognition as the popular giants. So what are people sipping today? Here’s a short list.


Appleton Estate—Made in Jamaica. V/X is aged in wood for five years, elegant Extra for 12 years.


Bacardi 8—Crafted using the original recipe and aging process created by Don Facundo Bacardi in 1862. Aged eight years in small, hand-selected oak casks.


Cruzan Estate Single-Barrel—The only single-barrel rum on the market. Triple-distilled in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and aged up to 12 years in American-oak barrels.


Doorly’s XO—Made in Barbados. A blend of barrel-aged spir- its that undergo a second maturation in Spanish-oak oloroso Sherry casks.


Grand Havana—A traditional añejo made on Grenada from Cuban sugarcane. Matured in 40-gallon Spanish Sherry casks.


Kaniche—From Martinique and Guadeloupe. Made from freshly harvested, pure sugarcane juice and distilled in copper alembic stills.


Mount Gay Extra Old—A blend composed of some of the oldest and most prized rums in the Mount Gay reserves.


Pampero Aniversario—Distilled in Venezuela. A blend of six- to eight-year-old rums with a remarkably deep amber-red color.


Pyrat XO Reserve—Made on Anguilla. A full-bodied blend of barrel-aged rums distilled in the British West Indies.


Rhum Barbancourt Estate Réserve—Crafted in Haiti. Like Cognac, double distilled from sugarcane and aged in small white-oak casks for 15 years.


Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva—A famous Cuban brand now made in the Dominican Republic. Solera aged approximate- ly 15 years. Composed of rums between eight and 32 years old.


Sea Wynde—Traditional British Navy style. A blend of five pure pot-still rums from Jamaica and Guyana aged between five and 11 years.


Zaya Gran Reserva—From Guatemala. Double distilled in copper pot stills and aged in oak barrels for 12 years.
