Who holds the key to understanding food and wine pairing—women or men? Ask Deborah Brenner, and she’ll point to women. The founder of “Women of the Vine" wine and events simplifies wine and food pairing.

Who holds the key to understanding how to pair wine and food—women or men?

If you ask Deborah Brenner, she’ll point to women. After authoring the book, “Women of the Vine,” which shared stories of 21 women “who make, taste and enjoy wine,” Brenner decided to join their ranks with her own wine label, “Women of the Vine.”

When the conversations about wine begin to get interesting.

As much as drinking wine, I enjoy talking with wine people.  Fortunately, I get to do that quite often, sometimes several times per week, by phone, at restaurants in New York, at wineries in Greece or Paso Robles or Mendoza.  Somewhere in the middle of the discussion of grape-growing and winemaking techniques, a topic will often pop up like those red plastic “it’s done” temperature ga

A look inside the metal roll up doors and angular concrete architecture of Lompoc’s Sobhani Business Park reveals an unexpected treasure.

There are no grand entrances or picturesque picnic areas. No sweeping vineyard vistas or vine-themed boutiques. But a look inside the metal roll up doors and angular concrete architecture of Lompoc’s Sobhani Business Park reveals an unexpected treasure: some of Santa Barbara County’s most talented winemakers are crafting wines in a raw, industrial space.

Salcheto's Michele Manelli is as refreshing as the wines he makes.

Since there is a color called “passion pink”, there should be a ”passion green” for folks like Tuscan winemaker Michele Manelli of Salcheto.  Everything about Manelli and Salcheto is green except the color of their wines.

A winery tour in Maryland shows world-class talent along with could-do-much-better possibilities.

A few years ago, a local restaurateur where I live in southern Pennsylvania was not amused when I pointed out his locally sourced menu had no locally sourced wines, even though there were a dozen wineries within 25 miles of his highly regarded restaurant.  He brought out the same arguments that are always used by eateries not located in the West Coast wine belt: (1) There are no good local

Santa Barbara County winemaker Deborah Hall followed a series of cryptic historical clues--quill-scrawled letters, a frayed 18th century tome, and a modern-day DNA sample--to find treasure in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Early Spanish explorers may have consulted elaborate treasure maps in their search of the mythical gold of El Dorado, but Santa Barbara County winemaker Deborah Hall followed a series of cryptic historical clues--quill-scrawled letters, a frayed 18th century tome, and a modern-day DNA sample--to find treasure in the Sta. Rita Hills.

"It is hard to show Chardonnay lovers something 'new'"

Under the direction of General Manager Dusty Frierson, the wine programs at Purple Parrot Cafe and Crescent City Grill in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, have received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2005. When asked to recommend some Chardonnay for spring, these two names were at the tip of his tongue:

In the legendary world of the small importer, every bottle has a story.

In the sub-culture of wine marketing, the most-interesting tales are told of indie wine importers who got their starts tirelessly and sometimes fanatically searching out small wine producers in their chosen regions – the Loire or Liguria, Austria or Australia, Piemonte or Provence.  Almost always these importers are solitary men who bird-dog the trade fairs and spend weeks along the back r

Whether you are Tiger Woods or Enrique Tirado, if you're going to be the best, it helps to have someone who will tell you what you can do better.

Chile makes some of the world’s best Cabernet Sauvignons, both actually and potentially, and one of its iconic ones is Concha y Toro’s Don Melchor.  Since 1997, Enrique Tirado has been responsible for making Don Melchor, and, like every other winemaker in the world, he is a good son who first gives praise to the virtues of Mother Vineyard, where, as legend and faith have it, every great wi

Defining a trophy wine is no laughing matter.

So what is a ‘trophy red?’ Nearly every member of our panel of distinguished sommeliers asked that question when we asked them if they would like to contribute their favorites for this article. Our facile and somewhat macabre answer was “a wine to die for, or perhaps even to kill for.”

Wine is okay with food, but it goes better with good conversation.

It is only because I am a fanatic about staying on schedule that I force myself to button up my raincoat and take the elevator downstairs and out onto the windy March streets of Manhattan after spending an hour talking with Nicole Rolet and drinking her Chêne Bleu wines.

A conundrum: Estates are always upgrading techniques and facilities.  So why do so many older vintages taste delicious?

Great wine estates, and wine estates striving to be great, often give much contemplation and spend huge amounts of money making incremental changes they believe will make their wines even better or at least not let them fall behind their competitors.

North Carolina estate has it both ways, growing grapes locally and also buying them on the West Coast.

One of the most-interesting wineries in the United States is located in the Great Smoky Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina.  You have probably heard about it but may not have tasted its wines unless you happened to have visited the property, which tens of thousands of people do annually.

Sommeliers show off their hand-picked, iPad-based wine lists. Servers jockey to increase the beverage tab. Who cares what the diner really wants to drink?

Sommeliers show off their hand-picked, iPad-based wine lists. Servers jockey to increase the beverage tab. Who cares what the diner really wants to drink?

Recently I met two pros who leave their superior attitude behind the bar and approach food and beverage pairing from the guest’s viewpoint. They instinctively know that “guest” is the Latin root word for hospitality.
