The Dozen - By the Glass, Buy the Bottle

Owners of wine bars – remember those? – loved to buy bottles that delivered something better than generic flavors at reasonable prices to sell as wine by the glass.

I thought of that when tasting through today’s dozen – wines that would be great as simple by the glass selections, with ten of them retailing for under $30. The selection is an eclectic one as well – white, red, sparkling and one rosé.

Polish me a glass, please.

2019 Alois Lageder “Terra Alpina” Dolomiti Pinot Bianco ($13). Pleasant green fruit flavors with notes of whey or white cheese in the finish.

2018 Oberon Los Carneros Chardonnay ($20). In the French style – tangy fruit, metallic minerality, crisp finish.

NV Cleto Chiarli “Premium” Lambrusco di Sorbara Secco ($16). Nicely tart and lively cranberry flavors, almost like a cranberry cider.

NV Cleto Chiarli Spumanté Rosé Brut ($16). Simple but pleasurable with medium body and cherry/strawberry tastes and light minerality.

NV Faire la Fête Limoux Brut ($20). Intense apple and bite-into-one grape flavors with good, steady bubbles and finishing acidity.

2018 Baileyana Edna Valley Rosé of Pinot Noir ($23). Refreshing – cherry and strawberry flavors with good minerality and finishing acidity.

2017 Dow’s Vale do Bomfim Douro Red ($13). Muted fruits with savory notes and lots of tannins.

2018 Crasto Douro Red Wine ($18). Nice, spicy red fruits with prickly tannins – very fresh.

2018 Oberon Napa County Merlot ($21). Luscious fruit without being fruit-forward, some rich, fresh corn notes and mild tannins.

2018 Oberon Napa County Cabernet Sauvignon ($22). Very bright red fruit for a Cab, with lots of fresh acidity and some dusty tannins.

2016 Tinto Pesquera Ribero del Duero Crianza ($33). Straight-forward rich fruitness and mellow oak with pleasantly lean finish.

2015 Pasqua “Famiglia Pasqua” Amarone della Valpolicello ($43). Very nice – smooth fruitiness that seems very ripe without appearing very sweet with lots of juicy black raspberries.
