The Dozen - State of Red

Yeah, yeah, now is the season that I’m supposed to overwhelm you with fresh, fragrant whites, enchanting bubbles and minerally rosés. But let’s do something else. Let’s continue to pour reds for a little longer.

To double down, let’s even throw in a couple of Portos, especially the Graham’s Tawny, which can go into the back of the refrigerator for sipping on the back porch of a summer’s evening instead of Bourbon.

Corkscrews at the ready!

2018 Amalaya Salta Malbec ($16). Enjoyable, though a little rough around the edges – with cassis, cherry, spicy and earthy brownie flavors.

2017 Colomé Valle Calchaqui Malbec ($25). Very fresh, concentrated and lightly sweet berry flavors.

2018 Colomé “Auténtico” Valle  Calchaqui Malbec ($30). Dark berries with wood notes, good structure and pronounced tannins.

2017 Ornellaia “Le Volte dell’ Ornellaia” Tuscan IGP ($30). A leanish wine with very nice blackberry flavors, some earthiness and dusty tannins in the finish.

2017 River Road “Stephanie’s Cuvee” Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($30). Enjoyable and mellow, with ripe cherries, dusty tannins and a little buttermilky tanginess in the finish.

2018  7 Cellars “Farm Collection” Monterey Pinot Noir ($30). Light-bodied with light cherry flavors.

2017 Gehricke Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($32). Rounded plum and cherry flavors, though not too fruit-forward, and a savory finish.

2017 Stags’ Leap Napa Valley Petite Sirah ($37). A powerful, burly wine with concentrated dark fruits and good savory balance.

2017 Aia Vecchia “Sor Ugo” Bolgheri Superiore ($38). Rounded dark berry flavors and dried spices with some edginess and lots of dusty tannins.

2017 Anaba Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48). Fresh, bright fruit, but with good acidity and a little tang in the finish.

2015 Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage Porto ($24). A very good LBO needs to have enough rich fruit to be noticed and enough nutty tannins to balance it out – and this one fills that bill.

Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port ($65). Absolutely delicious – very smooth and relatively light on the palate, lots of nutty flavors with toasted caramel and a lovely note of green acidity in the finish.
